Tube score ! This could happen to you if you happen upon a friendly service technician who has
simply given up trying to fix all his old broken stuff and would rather drink beer and relax. He was
just glad that his old stuff had found a home............ and he didn't want any money for it. Check
out my misfortune !
Unreal ! Allen gave me this whole assortment, including: Eico 950B R/C comparator Bridge, a parts bin
that has ceramic 'Angela' style 7,8,9 pin sockets(new), 250r/55w power resistors, Sprague .18-400V
vitamin Q's, .15-400V Pyramids, .05-400V Gudeman caps, all are sealed epoxy models. Power tubes
are all new in box 6V6, 2-6V6GT's, 2-6K6GT's, a 6BQ5 and a 6L6GB. 9-pins include 4-12BH7's,
7-12AU7's, 9-6072/12AY7's, a 12 AX7, 2-Philco 7247's, 3 Sylvania 5879 mini- pentodes, 2-6FQ7's
and some 5651's. Boxes are dusty but all new tubes !!
He was also sick of being burdened
with this Stackpole assortment of
carbon-comp resistors. 1/2,1,and 2
watt values, all usable standard guitar
amp values !!
Nice metal display box too. 100k's, 1
megs, 220k's, 470k's 2.2 megs...you
get the idea.
This all came about when we were
riding together on a service call for
some equipment repair- we talked
tubes for a few hours and after the call
he invites me to the shop and hands all
this over !!
Did I mention the Octals ? Whoa,
12-6SN7's, some are RCA's, some
Sylvania's, some Ken Rad
-who the heck is Ken Rad ? :) Also 4 pcs. of
JAN 6SJ7's. Another box holds a brand new
6SL7GT and Holy Smokes ! A red-base
5691 !!
Did I mention he didn't want any money for
any of these ? Other octals were a 5Y3 and 2
5U4's, never used.
As if this week's score wasn't enough, last week's phone call from a buddy who'd come across 'some
old Heathkit PA amp' was a real mind-blower....he actually wanted 20 bucks for the thing, so I
looked a schem at triode Electronics site for Heath W5M. Hmm, 2-12AU7's, a 5R4GY...and 2
KT-66's ?!?!?. Naw, couldn't possibly still have original tubes. I took off the dusty cover, and lo and
behold...two new Genelex KT66's.
And 2 Mullard 12AU7's !! The Peerless/Altec Ultralinear OT (15-20 watt) was also pristine. The PT
puts out over 500V but only at 100 or so milliamps so is a doorstop for now. Concensus on the
audiophile websites is that these have some nice parts but have high PT failure rates, plus no standby
switches, and undersized OT's for hifi applications especially considering the output tubes ! I think I
have projects in mind for ALL of these bits...did I mention that he only wanted 20 bucks for this stuff
???
I know you all feel mighty sorry for me
at this point- I'm really sorry, I don't
know how this stuff happens...could it
be some good karma coming back
from that kidney I donated back in
January ?
Whatever it may be, I'm not
complaining !
For Ampagers- if you're interested in
trying out building with octals I'd sell a
couple fairly cheap for
EXPERIMENTS only, not for resale
and not to anyone I don't recognize
from Ampage. Email me !
