Found by side of the road...'68 Deluxe Reverb AB763 !!
Got a call the other day from Debbie C., Alison Pipitone's friend and head Roadie, and she said she
came across an amp by the side of the road on trash day and wondered if I wanted it for parts...she
wasn't sure of the model but knew it was a Fender. Imagine my surprise when I arrived to find a
99% intact Deluxe Reverb ! The only missing pieces were the footswitch and the fuseholder insert !!
Not even a tear in the grillcloth. The 'transition' aluminum frame around the baffle doesn't have a
single dent. This is not the removable velcro frame of the 70's models, this is definately a '68 as
stamped in the chassis.
Somebody replaced the speaker with what looks like an Eminence 'JBL' clone. The plastic cap
removes revealing a 38-40 oz. ceramic magnet and a 1.25" voice coil. The cone is ribbed and has a
mirror-finish dust-cap that's 2-1/2" in diameter. The back panels are unbroken and the tolex on the top
has a couple paint drips that removed easily with a mineral spirits/xylene mix applied with soft rag. The
reverb pan is not the original Accutronics model but appears to be a Gibbs model; it may work but I
want to clean all the jacks etc. before firing up the chassis on the bench with the variac.
Note the RCA 5AR4 and American
6V6's still in the chassis ! All other
tubes are NOS except the reverb
driver tube which was a Mesa STR
12AT7.
The chassis itself is absolutely pristine and free of butchery and mods. Two Orange drop caps
are the only non-stock parts in the amp excepting the speaker and reverb pan. The original
470R screen resistors are in place and all values appear to be consistent with AB763
schematics. The only circuit change done at Fender that differs from the 'blackface' era is the
addition of a 1200pF cap to ground from each 1.5k grid stopper. That's it ! All the same wiring
as my old '66 Super. Now the hard part !
What to do with the damn thing !?!?! The grillcloth looks nearly brand new...no rips in the
Tolex...
definately needs all the electrolytics changed....I actually wish it
was a trashed chassis, because I
could then go about fixing all the ills with this design. Oh well- another mysterious gift that I
guess I'll clean up and sell, maybe put on eBay ? If anybody is interested in this amp please feel
free to
email me with any enquiries or possible trades. I'm not a Deluxe fan per se so I have no
sentimental attachment to this design- but it IS a really clean example of its kind. Thanks again,
Debbie C. !! Geez, after last week's amazing
tube score, this is turning out to be a wild summer
! What's next ?!?!? Cheers, Alex
